Approximately 12 years ago I started, along with a friend, a nappy manufacturing business on our kitchen tables. The mountains of fluff and houseful of fabrics were fine, but I loved the marketing most.
This was before Facebook and Twitter (so funny to write that!) but I quickly found that engaging with people on parenting websites and forums made a huge difference to our brand. Simply by building a rapport with existing and potential customers led to our brand really taking off and soon we were selling all over the world and into Mothercare!
Nappies became less interesting to me by the time my daughter started secondary school (and my aims of growing a business had been achieved) so I sold my share. They’re still going , do check them out on Easy Peasy Nappies, fab product!
My role as Business Manager with a major bank meant I gained a real understanding of all kinds of small businesses. As you know, owners are always spinning many plates, often ones they know nothing about and that take them away from what they love to do. It became clear to me that marketing was often not a priority and businesses ended up in a cycle where they were too busy to market or too quiet.
In the meantime I was managing the Social Media for a local sports club and found I was very good at it. I increased an annual events takings by £2000, just through Twitter!
It is no surprise that banks are reducing branch staff and when a move to a city branch, away from the lovely market town where I knew all my clients, was suggested I knew it was time to move. I was accepted onto the prestigious Digital Mums course and handed in my notice the same day!
So here I am, lots of experience and training behind me, ready to help your business grow……
